Entry #6: RIP Peter Baker
Updated: Oct 1
I've mentioned the memorial next to the old Conjure Coal Mine entrance before. It lists the 23 miners who died during The Conjure Quake Event, except one of the names has been scratched out.
It's Peter "Pete" Baker. It wasn't hard at all to figure out. The names of the 23 miners are public record and there are only 22 names left on the memorial. What I want to know is why somebody hated Pete Baker enough to remove him from it. Peter was the husband of Birdie Baker, who I've talked about before. He was one of the miners trapped underground during the quake, while Birdie would later become one of the Sickened Seven who climbed Conjure Mountain to investigate what had happened up there.
I've been trying to find out more about ol' Pete, but so far I haven't found anything that explains why his name would be singled out. He died in the mine with everyone else. As far as I can tell, he wasn't responsible for the collapse. He wasn't removed from the official list of victims as his name is still there in the records. Somebody just didn't want him on the memorial. And considering who his wife was, I have a hard time believing that's completely meaningless. If I'm right that The Witch Lady is Birdie Baker, then there's a pretty obvious person I'd like to ask. Unfortunately, she's not exactly taking questions these days.
